Twee Belsen

In his paintings, Fred ten Tusscher (1940-2023), achieves an unusual form of synergy between two most significant movements known to modern art. Rather than swing indescriminately between one movement and the other, he synthesises the essential characteristics of both "isms" in this own unique style, having found an original medium of expression to complement his personality. 

Besides the amount of (self)portraits Fred painted in his life, he also painted a lot of animals; robust and sturdy cows and horses. This - most likely -  stems from the fact he was living in the eastern part of Holland which is known as quite a rural area. 

A "Bels" is a common informal name for the Belgian draft horse. It is a large, strong, and robust cold-blooded breed characterized by a stocky build, a heavy neck, and abundant feathering long hair on its legs.
